What Is A Gyðja In Norse Shamanism? What Is The Role Of A Gydja?

Norse Shaman, Seidkona And Volva In Seidr

What Is A Gyðja (Gydja)?

A Gyðja is a female priestess, healer, seeress and acted as an oracle in Norse shamanism and Seidr practices. The Gyðja was considered an intermediary between humans and the gods/goddesses to bring though healing, blessings and wisdom from the gods to the community.

The Gyðja’s Role In Norse Shamanism And Seidr

The Gyðja held a special place in old Norse societies and she would conduct sacred ceremonies to provide spiritual guidance for the community. The Gyðja was responsible for helping people of the village to maintain their connection to the gods/goddesses in order to receive blessings, guidance and support from the gods in their daily lives. Gyðjur have special mystical abilities that are prophetic in nature and people would seek out a Gyðja to ask divination questions about issues they were facing in their lives to the gods and receive an answer from the Gyðja. The word “Gyðja” also means “speaker of the gods”. The Gyðja, then would take those questions to the gods and receive an answer to the relay this back to the person.

Other Important Spiritual Roles of The Gyðja in Seidr Practices

The Gyðja had many other important roles in the community where the Gyðja would conduct ceremonies in a person’s home, at a sacred place in nature (eg: groves of trees, near a lake, at waterfalls), in a temple or would travel to meet people who lived remotely outside of a village. The Gyðja had three main roles including:

  1. Conducting public and private rituals and ceremonies to make offerings to the gods/goddesses in order for people to receive healing, blessings, help and support in their daily lives. The gods/goddess would then bless the people with good fortune or to ensure a successful outcome of a situation.

  2. Engaging in prophecy: gyðjur were seers and received important messages from the gods/goddesses and spirits through dreams, divination practices, and visions that would foretell the future and the gyðjur would offer this wisdom to the community and share these messages from the spirit world. The  gyðjur were sought out from people in the community to help them make important decisions and to better understanding their destinies and life’s path.

  3. Healing Seidr practices: gyðjur were experts in the healing practices of seidr, which is a form of Norse magic. These Seidr healing techniques were also associated with shamanism and divination. In Seidr, gyðjur would go into trance states to commune with spirits to perform healing sessions for people who were sick or to gain knowledge of the source of illness and its remedy or influence events. Gyðjur skilled in seidr practices would use their sacred abilities for healing, create protection, or to influence outcomes of events to manifest better success.
